Around Vest-Telemark

A journey into the region's nature, culture and history.
On your way you can visit Grimdalstunet, Åmdals-Verk Mines, Vest-Telemark Museum at Eidsborg and Norwegian Ski Museum in Morgedal.

The drive starts along lake Vråvatn and continues on through forests and small villages. Near Dalen we'll stop at Grimdalstunet.
Grimdalen is the birthplace and childhood home of sculptor Anne Grimdalen. She is most well-known for her work decorating the town hall in Oslo. Today Grimdalen is a listed farm yard with houses dating back to the Middle Ages and a building housing sculptures made by Anne Grimdalen. Every summer there's an exhibition here with famous artists. There's also a café at the museum.
An alternative stopping place is Åmdals Verk Mines, an interesting mining museum based on copper mines that were mined in the period from 1540 to 1945.
Drive on towards Dalen, which is situated 72 meters above sea level and the ending point of the Telemark Canal. Here you'll find the wonderful Hotel Dalen.
From Dalen you'll drive on to Vest-Telemark Museum at Eidsborg. This is an outdoor museum which shows you old traditions in folk art and craft.
Eidsborg Stavkirke is also situated at the museum grounds. It's Norway's smallest remaining stave church. A tour here can give you exciting stories about the development of and the significance the stave church had for the local community.
From Eidsborg you'll drive east to Morgedal, which is also called "The cradle of modern skiing". Here you'll find the entertainment centre Norwegian Ski Museum, which shows modern ski history through pictures, exhibitions and film. There is a souvenir shop and café at the museum.
From Morgedal you'll drive back to Vrådal via Kviteseid. You can stop at Kviteseid museum of local history on your way back.
